Wildlife and Nature
We are producing a growing library of wildlife scans - mostly cranium and jaw bones. We have access to a large collection of private skulls found by our team and fellow nature enthusiasts.
All of these models are free to download and print for yourself - we struggle to justify copyright a design grown by nature!
We use our high-resolution structured light scanner to produce these. Our goal is to have a significant collection of digital models of species found in the UK.
Anglo-Saxon Grave Goods
We were very pleased to work with Robert Chester at Sewerby Hall producing 3D printed replicas of Anglo-Saxon grave goods. These are being used for school workshops teaching about the Anglo-Saxons who once lived and were buried at the site.
We published the scans and the edited models we used for printing to help inform and educate. Feel free to download them for educational purposes.
Normanby Hall Scans
It’s great to be currently work on a project with Madeleine Gray at Normanby Hall. We’re printing mini replicas, and furniture parts to increase accessibility for the visually impaired. We’ve uploaded the scans we’re printing with to our Sketchfab.
Feel free to view the scans - both colour and detailed printable models are included. The collection includes Napoleon’s death mask! The Hall is well worth a visit.
Covid-19 Virion: In House Model
During the pandemic we noticed a lack of detailed printable models of the Covid-19 virus. We put in the research and created a macromolecular model of the surface proteins and the lipid bilayer.
The printable version is available on Thingiverse. A molecular model and an origami model are also available.
A detailed breakdown of the information about the models and research behind them is available from the button above.
Statue Collection
Statues are great! We’re slowly creating a library of scan of statues we come across. Currently, most of these are located at Sewerby Hall as this is a rather convenient location. However we plan to add to our collection in due course.
The statues found in stately homes are often copied from one another so you may well see familiar faces!
Fossil Collection
We’ve keen amateur palaeontologists, we have a large private collection fossils which we’re slowly digitising. At the moment the collections a bit limited but as soon as we get the time we’ll add more!
Where Chapel Prints is based happens to be on ground which supports a cretaceous sponge bed so we have a lot of example of such species.
Techniques and Formats
The most useful formats in 3D printing are STL, OBJ, and PLY. We’ve learn to convert and use a big ranges of other types, we know how to format Dicom, DEM, LAS, TIFF, PDB, , DAE, FBX, SVG, and a host of others.
Once we have a solid OBJ, or STL, we use a slicer to convert the file to a gcode format understood by our FDM printers. Our resin printers support brand, specifc formats.
In this way we have a vast library of copyright free printable data. Thanks to our scanners we can also produce in house models. We also produce clay models which we scan-in, as well as in silico model making using 3D editing software.
